The new year is fast approaching, and many of us are thinking about our goals for 2025. If you’re a creative person, you might have a list of dozens of things that you’d like to do – but in reality, you can only focus on one thing at a time if you want to succeed.
How I Choose my Focus
I like to do a journaling exercise in which I assess several different areas of my life and brainstorm what I could do to improve them.
Step One:
For this exercise I recommend writing by hand. Grab your favorite notebook and turn to a clean page. You’re going to write down these seven different areas of life:
Spiritual/Emotional Life
Health
Personal/Hobbies
Creative Life
Relationships
Business
Finances
Now, rate each area from 1-10. Trust your instincts – this is your life.
Step Two:
Look at the three areas that you rated the lowest. Which would have the biggest impact on your life if you could improve it? This will become your area of focus.
Step Three:
Chances are, you already have something specific in mind that you know you want to work on. For instance, if health is your focus, you might want to exercise more. Write this down, along with everything else you might like to do in this part of your life. Don’t judge your ideas – write everything down, no matter how implausible.
Step Four:
Look at your list and circle up to three of your favorite ideas. Of these three, which one would make the biggest difference? This will be your first goal for 2025.
Now that you know your area of focus, it’s time to turn your plan into reality. Put it on your calendar.
The last thing you’re going to do is commit. Share your new goal on social media or in a comment on this entry.
